Bring in the military!

Last year 333 rhinos were poached in the Kruger Park alone, a crisis situation which called for drastic action. The park called in the big guns - the SA Defense Force - to help defend the rhinos from the slaughter. According to Brigadier Koos Liebenberg, the deployment of army personnel from Operation Corona, based in Skukuza, along the borders of the park has helped significantly to reduce the number of rhinos shot and maimed by crime syndicates, and also helped contain the number of illegal immigrants crossing into South Africa.

Beeld reports that since the operation began in March the number of rhino poaching incidents has decreased dramatically - from 40 in March to 30 in April, 15 in May and 2 in June. So far no rhinos have been killed in the Kruger Park in July. Let's hope that their continued surveillance brings ongoing peace to rhino-land.
